From 2018 to 2021, I was a part-time Master of Journalism student and worked full-time for Google. While I was working in news and publishing for the private sector, I also wanted to gain editorial skills for the newsroom. I felt HKU offered the best option for me because of JMSC’s commitment to journalistic ethics and principles, the diverse and reputable faculty, and the chance to gain hands-on experience in a historically and politically significant city.

The master’s programme at HKU Journalism has been instrumental in my experience in starting out as an early-career journalist. As someone with very minimal experience in journalism before I started the programme, I was glad to be exposed to a broad range of skills which are increasingly important for reporters today – including video, digital, and data journalism.

JMSC gave me a happy and meaningful experience, where I met professional teachers and like-minded classmates, acquired valuable knowledge and made lifelong friends. I learnt practical silks in various storytelling methods and produced works which I may be proud of through my life time. China-related courses also deepened my understanding of contemporary China, preparing me a better mind to tell stories of this complex country. HKU Journalism pushes you directly into the deep end in order to shape its students into the best journalists they can be. In the span of a year, we were taught all the skills we need to thrive as a journalist, whether that be to write, report, film or interview. Despite joined the program with no prior background in journalism, I now work as a reporter full-time and feel confident in my abilities as a journalist.

The Master of Journalism programme exposed me to the multitude of skills expected of a modern journalist that goes beyond good storytelling: video journalism, understanding online misinformation, working with data and marketing your content. I joined the programme practically not knowing what doing journalism meant. But in just nine months, I was ready to report on stories with the journalistic rigour needed in a world where readers constantly question what they read.

The master's programme in journalism (MJ) at JMSC helped me to become a multimedia journalist who's able to work under intense situations. At JMSC, you get so many hands-on opportunities to master different multimedia skills like video reporting, photography, broadcasting, podcasting and data journalism. The faculty members are all very friendly and their doors are always open for students after class. I was able to learn and improve my skill sets in such a short period of time. The class discussions on the ethical dilemma journalists might face have also helped me make better decisions at work.
