Gabriel graduated with first-class honours in 2022. He majored in Journalism and Politics and Public Administration, with a specialisation in International Relations. He was the recipient of scholarships like the Sir Man Kam Lo/Jardine Scholarship and the K. K. Ho Prize during his time at HKU. He has freelanced for news outlets like The Diplomat and Hong Kong Free Press.

Shari Nijman and Ng Yuk-hang pivoted from journalism to do international humanitarian work to make the world a better and safer place. Shari works as a communication officer at UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, in Bangladesh. Yuk-hang is a London-based policy manager for the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), an international nonprofit that finances research to develop vaccines.

Having built a successful career at HSBC, Robin Pang is now a director at the bank’s global private banking division. Part of the "Magic 20," the first cohort of the BJ programme at the JMSC, he pursued a double degree in journalism and finance. Robin attributes his career success to empathy and lifelong learning.

JMSC Receives $32 Million Donation From Shum Family

The Journalism and Media Studies Centre (JMSC) has received a donation of HK$ 32.1 million from its longtime benefactor, the late Mrs Lee Shum Shuk Yuen.  JMSC Director Professor Ruby Yang announced the donation during the JMSC’s 25th anniversary celebration on Saturday, June 8.  "Over the past year, Professor Yang has served as the Interim Director of the Centre with passion and visionary leadership, which has played a pivotal role in fostering sustainable growth and strengthening the Centre's position," said Professor Ming Wen, the Dean of Social Sciences.
