Applications are invited for appointments as Tenure-Track Associate Professor / Assistant Professor / Non-Tenure Track Associate Professor of Practice / Assistant Professor of Practice (several posts) in the Journalism and Media Studies Centre (JMSC), to commence on 1 July, 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal, with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract for tenure-track appointment.
The JMSC is a recognised leader in journalism education and we are committed to training future leaders in journalism in Asia and the world. We are located in Hong Kong, Asia’s most dynamic city, at a crossroads of China, Southeast Asia and the world. Our graduates have been highly successful and hold positions at major news outlets including The New York Times, Bloomberg, CNN and The Wall Street Journal, among many others. As the JMSC enters its third decade, we are looking to expand with new programmes and recruit distinguished professionals—journalism practitioners and scholars—who are enthusiastic about teaching as well as curriculum development, and can make continuous contributions to the field at a time of revolutionary change in the industry, political upheaval and uncertainty, and pressing challenges to freedom of the press. We are looking for professionals who love to teach and are passionate about training the next generation of journalists in this exciting part of the world at this exciting time, and provide leadership to enhance the JMSC’s profile both locally and internationally.
The Centre welcomes applicants with different specialties and expertise such as media law, news literacy, business journalism, China reporting, health and science reporting, data journalism, investigative journalism, and digital media. For tenure-track academic appointments, applicants should possess a PhD degree in journalism or a related field, with a minimum of one-year post-doctoral teaching experience at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level(s), and a strong record of research and publications.
For professional practice appointments, applicants should have a minimum of eight years full-time professional experience in journalism. Those with three or more years in senior management positions, who have distinguished professional standing and a minimum of three years teacher/trainer experience at tertiary or professional level are strongly encouraged to apply and will be considered for Associate Professor of Practice. Those with a minimum of five years professional experience and one year teaching experience will be considered for the level of Assistant Professor of Practice. Applicants should have proven effectiveness in transferring knowledge from professional practice to the teaching environment; publication of original and professional work (articles, commentaries, columns and editorials, investigative reports, news features, programmes, segments, scripts, reviews and analyses of critical issues) in books or popular media (newspapers, magazines, photo exhibits, radio, film, television and new media). Professional journalists with an international reputation earned through news coverage and a track record of successful teaching experience are preferred. Journalists with a minimum of three years teaching experience and a distinguished track record in the field or significant international experience such as reporters, editors, producers and/or senior managers are also encouraged to apply.
The appointees will be required to teach courses; supervise student theses and projects; contribute actively to the Centre’s media-related research; participate in curriculum development; and take on administrative responsibilities and project management.
A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered. The appointments will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of basic salary, as well as annual leave and medical benefits.
