JMSC Students Learn Their Trade in Internships Across the Region

Over the winter break, 40 graduate students from the Journalism and Media Studies Center participated in internships that immersed them in the day-to-day work of practicing journalists. Their experience included writing spot reports, drafting feature stories, and producing television and radio news for a variety of media outlets across the Asia region.

Academy Award Winner Ruby Yang Joins JMSC

Ruby Yang, the Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker, has joined the Journalism and Media Studies Centre as Hong Kong University’s Hung Leung Hau Ling Distinguished Fellow in Humanities. In addition to teaching a course on documentary video production, the Chinese-American filmmaker will be running the “Ruby Yang Workshop.”  Both the documentary course and the workshop will be available to all HKU students.

Two Veteran Journalists from Top U.S. News Organizations Join JMSC Faculty

Two seasoned journalists from The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times have joined the Journalism and Media Studies Centre as Adjust Professors. Adam Najberg (WSJ) will be teaching a course on financial journalism, while Brian Zittel (NYT) will teach opinion writing. Both stress the importance of "telling a good story."

Veteran Bloomberg Reporter on the Skills Today’s Journalists Need

A veteran Bloomberg reporter tells JMSC students that today's journalists should have passion, talent, and tenacity and that business news is no different from any other kind of reporting beat -- business journalists still need to have strong writing skills, be good listeners, and do their homework. Doing live TV interviews, however, required a certain skill set.
