Summer workshops at JMSC

The Journalism and Media Studies Centre is offering a variety of workshops this summer to help you develop your photography, filming and communication skills. All workshops will be taught by our full-time teaching staff and held in our classrooms at Eliot Hall on the main campus of The University of Hong Kong in Pok Fu Lam.

Basic Video Shooting & Editing

Instructors: AJ Libunao and Matt Walsh

• 13 July 2018, 6:30pm-9:30pm (Friday)
• 14 July 2018, 10:00am-5:00pm (Saturday)
• 15 July 2018, 10:00am-5:00pm (Sunday)

Duration: 15 hours / Class size: 14 / Cost: HK$4,600 for one person or HK$8,500 for two people

Video skills are increasingly important in a wide variety of business contexts. Learn the principles of shooting good quality video images and assembling them with a polished, professional look. Use our equipment or bring your own. Includes an introduction to Adobe Premiere Pro for video editing.

We will inform you by 3 July 2018 at the latest, after which we will ask that you pay in full within three business days to confirm your registration. Fundamentals of Photography

Learn the fundamental skills of capturing attractive images: focus, exposure, lighting, framing and composition. Includes an introduction to Adobe Lightroom.

Presentation Skills & Public Speaking

Duration: 5 hours / Class size: 15 / Cost: HK$1,550 for one person or HK$2,850 for two people

Public speaking is an essential skill in any industry. This one-day course will help you speak with more confidence and clarity, and organise your presentations to be more effective.

Note: The “Presentation Skills and Public Speaking” workshops will be held when a minimum of four participants register. We will inform you by 3 July 2018 (Option 1) or 11 July 2018 (Option 2) at the latest, after which we will ask that you pay in full within three business days to confirm your registration. Media Training for Spokespersons & Corporate Communications Staff

• 25 July 2018, 10:00am-6:00pm (Wednesday)

Duration: 7 hours / Class size: 20 / Cost: HK$2,450 for one person or HK$4,500 for two people

Customised media training is usually undertaken by large companies at considerable cost. This one-day workshop is aimed at smaller companies and individuals seeking an understanding of how the media work and how to develop successful communications strategies. Learn about writing press releases and pitching stories to news outlets, handling reporters’ questions, and navigating the media’s response to a crisis involving your company.

Note: The “Media Training for Spokespersons and Corporate Communications Staff” workshops will be held when a minimum of four participants register. We will inform you of payment instructions when we receive your registration, after which we will ask that you pay in full within three business days to confirm your registration. We may contact you sooner if we reach the the minimum number of participants. We accept payment in cash, cheque, or bank transfer. Please note:

1. The JMSC reserves the right to cancel a workshop or amend workshop details.
2. Registration will be on a first come, first served basis.
3. Registration will be confirmed upon full payment of fees and a payment receipt will be issued on the first day of the workshop.
4. Workshop fees will be refunded only if the JMSC cancels a workshop.
5. Participants of JMSC workshops should be 18 years old or above. Those under 18 will be considered on a case-by-case basis and will require parental consent.
6. Members of AAJA, FCC Hong Kong and SOPA, as well as staff, students and alumni of The University of Hong Kong, are entitled to a 10% discount on all workshops. Please provide valid documentation to prove membership and affiliation for verification. The JMSC reserves the right to cancel a registration if the membership and affiliation details are invalid at the time of registration and no refund will be made.
