Fion Li

Fion Li was part of the "Magic 20", the inaugural BJ cohort of the JMSC. At 31, Fion was promoted to Hong Kong bureau chief at Bloomberg, becoming one of the youngest bureau chiefs in the company’s history. She recently stepped down as the leader of Bloomberg’s Asia Deals team and will take on a new challenge at Bloomberg's Europe headquarters in London this year.

Jennifer Jett

Life is full of surprises for American journalist Jennifer Jett. She dreamed of becoming a political journalist in Washington, DC, but she ended up staying in Asia after graduating from the JMSC. After working at the International Herald Tribune — later rebranded as the International New York Times — for a decade, she is now the Asia digital editor for NBC News.

Lydia Guo

MJ 2010, Lydia Guo, Director of Global Communications, Tencent
Lydia Guo became the director of global communications at Chinese tech giant Tencent after working at the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Before pursuing a career in corporate communications, she wrote for the Financial Times and Ignites Asia. As a reporter for China Business News, a Chinese financial and business newspaper, she won the 2014 Journalist of the Year – Investment award for the Chinese category from the State Street Institutional Press Awards, Asia Pacific.

Zela Chin is the supervising producer for Pearl Magazine, TVB Pearl’s weekly prime-time documentary programme. Hailing from Los Angeles, she started her journalism career working at CNN in Atlanta before moving to Hong Kong. She joined TVB after graduating from the JMSC — and has won multiple awards.

MJ 2016, Sonia Awale, Executive Editor, Nepali Times
Paavan Mathema and Sonia Awale, who studied at the JMSC on full scholarship, are making a difference in Nepal’s male-dominated media landscape. Paavan now serves as the Kathmandu bureau chief for Agence France-Presse, the French international news agency, while Sonia has risen through the ranks to become executive editor of Nepali Times, the country’s leading English-language weekly.

Alexandra Hoegberg

Alexandra Hoegberg pivoted from journalism to a career in life science communication when she returned to Sweden. She first worked as the head of global communications for Uppsala Monitoring Centre, which runs the WHO’s medicines and vaccines safety surveillance programme. After a stint at SwedenBIO, the association for the Swedish life science industry, Alexandra serves as the director of marketing and communications for Clinical Trial Consultants, a research organisation that conducts clinical trials for pharma firms.

JMSC Receives $32 Million Donation From Shum Family

The Journalism and Media Studies Centre (JMSC) has received a donation of HK$ 32.1 million from its longtime benefactor, the late Mrs Lee Shum Shuk Yuen. JMSC Director Professor Ruby Yang announced the donation during the JMSC’s 25th anniversary celebration on Saturday, June 8. "Over the past year, Professor Yang has served as the Interim Director of the Centre with passion and visionary leadership, which has played a pivotal role in fostering sustainable growth and strengthening the Centre's position," said Professor Ming Wen, the Dean of Social Sciences.
