Nov 30: Talk – The Future of Journalism Education and E-Learning

Howard Finberg, a former teacher at Northwestern University and San Francisco State University who is now the Director of Partnerships and Alliances at The Poynter Institute, will deliver a talk at the JMSC about the News University e-learning project on Friday, November 30, 2012.

The Poynter Institute’s News University (NewsU) is a pioneering online journalism and media training program that is open to students and professionals who wants to improve their journalism skills.

NewsU uses a variety of formats including self-directed courses, group seminars, and Webinars to teach multimedia techniques, writing, and reporting to more than 230,000 registered users in 200 countries.

Finberg, who has worked in journalism for 40 years, will share the lessons he has learned from the project and discuss the Poynter Institute’s evaluations of its short and longer forms of e-learning.

Finberg led the creation of the award-winning online service Arizona Central in 1995 and was named a “New Media Pioneer” by the Newspaper Association of America in 2000. He also established one of the first graphics desks in the United States at the Chicago Tribune, and was the founding editor of the country’s first syndicated newspaper graphics service.
