JMSC Hosts Global Marathon 2012 for Data Visualization

The JMSC is hosting the Global Marathon for Data Visualization in Hong Kong between November 9 and 11, 2012.

Students currently enrolled at the university level, either undergraduate or graduate, can compete individually or in a team of up to four members, and over US$10,000 will be allocated in prizes.

Data visualization is the study of the visual representation of data. Its aim is to communicate information through graphic means. The marathon will be the world’s largest student data visualization competition.

This year, the global student design community will tackle real world issues with data and design by participating in events hosted by partner universities like HKU, or online.

The Hong Kong meetup will be held at the Centre for Enhancement of Teaching and Learning’s brand new collaborative learning space at HKU.

At the beginning of the marathon a data set will be unveiled. Students will then compete over the weekend to design and build a project that creatively visualizes the data. They can work individually or in teams, participating either online or at one of the meetups. There will be separate categories for Interactive and Infographic Design.

Over the weekend, workshops by data visualisation experts will be broadcast. There will also be games, mini-challenges and more ways to connect with other students. At the end of the marathon, students will upload their finished projects and then get to see what everyone else has been working on.
