Nov 28: Joi Ito – Inspiring Innovation: Creating the Future at the MIT Media Lab

Joi Ito, the director of the MIT Media Lab, leading web entrepreneur and Chairman of Creative Commons, will give a talk hosted by the JMSC. Date: Monday, November 28. Time: 5 pm. Venue: Graduate House, HKU.

Joichi Ito, Japanese entrepreneur, venture capitalist, chair of Creative Commons and director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Media Lab, will talk about how to successfully innovate and inspire others to invent the future.  The talk will be held at the University of Hong Kong on November 28, 2011.

In order to celebrate the third anniversary of Creative Commons Hong Kong, Ito will talk about his pioneering role in some of the world’s most innovative Internet companies, including PSINet Japan, Twitter, Flickr and others. Hear how he views the future of research and development in the age of networked social media.

In addition to his role as director of the Media Lab at MIT, Ito is also general manager of Neoteny Labs, a start-up  fund focusing on Asia and the Middle East, and chair of Creative Commons, an international copyright licensing system. He is affiliated with research institutes in Japan and the United States, and on the board of such non-profit organizations as The Mozilla Foundation and Global Voices.
Ito has been recognized by publications from Time, which named him as a member of the “Cyber-Elite” in 1997, to Businessweek, which in 2008 called him one of the “25 Most Influential People on the Web”. He was selected by the World Economic Forum in 2001 as one of the “Global Leaders for Tomorrow.” In 2011, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Oxford Internet Institute in recognition of his role as one of the world’s leading advocates of Internet freedom.

He has set up and invested in numerous internet companies and now advises companies such as Twitter.
