Outernet is technology start-up that seeks to provide free basic web access broadcast via mini-cube satellites. This video explains the project well.
Outernet proposes to make the Internet’s information available to all the world’s population, with no limitation by technology access or government jurisdiction. Using open-source technology, the company enables anyone to vote on where the service is focused and what information is made available. Any person or organisation can access the information, which is broadcast using simple, cheap devices that can be easily acquired or configured.
Prior to Outernet, Karim led the start-up fund Digital News Ventures, a part of the Media Development Investment Funds, focused on digital news start-ups worldwide. His work has focused on innovation in the development and distribution of media products since he completed his master’s degree in Information Science at the University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana. He has worked at the prestigious IDEO product innovation and design firm as well as led digital strategy for Chicago’s public radio network, WBEZ. Karim is visiting Hong Kong for two days as part of sourcing the hardware for Outernet distribution and reception.
