JMSC Alumnus Ivan Broadhead won the top Gold Award for radio reporting in the 2010 Consumer Rights Reporting Awards for his documentary Shellfish Habit, which he produced and presented for Hong Kong public broadcaster, RTHK.
Broadhead’s documentary explored the links between triad criminal societies and the smuggling of abalone and crystal methamphetamine (better known as Ice or Shabu) between southern Africa and southern China, and revealed how Hong Kong triads are fuelling the South African drugs and AIDS crisis.
The programme can be heard here on RTHK’s website. Note: it contains potentially disturbing scenes recorded in Accident and Emergency Departments in African hospitals.
