Christopher Chiu Loi-fat (MJ 2001), has been appointed the chief editor of a new culture magazine, C for Culture to be launched in Hong Kong this Friday.
The monthly magazine is the brainchild of ”S Media Joint Conference”, a group of veteran culture editors and reporters in Hong Kong. The first issue features an interview with Gao Xingjian, the 2000 Nobel prize winner in literature, as well as reviews of theatre, music, art, dance, books and films from well known critics.
With $ 2.88 million in funding from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, C for Culture hopes to introduce serious cultural criticism into Hong Kong. Cultural enthusiasts have welcomed the publication as it fills a gap in Hong Kong’s cultural and literary life.
Similar magazines in the past have struggled to become commercially viable, but Chiu is hopeful. “It may be a small publication project, but it shoulders the best wishes of the local art and cultural sector and the interests of the audience in general”, he said.
Chiu, who was in the first class of MJ graduates, is a former assistant editor-in-chief at Ming Pao and writes a widely read blog.
