From Classroom to Newsroom: A BJ Student's Journey Through Journalism, Internships & Passion Projects
Q: What was your favourite part of the BJ programme?
The BJ programme enabled me to deepen my understanding of the media aspect of journalism. Courses like video journalism production and photography provided me with opportunities to explore journalistic issues through a visual and more creative approach. Furthermore, the assignments in these courses have also become valuable additions to my professional portfolio.
Q: You interned at NBC News—how was that experience?
I was fortunate to work at NBC News as an Asia Desk intern, which provided me with a real look into how newsrooms operate. During this experience, I developed a particular interest in the social news-gathering role and gained hands-on experience in geo-locating and verifying news. Collaborating with the team, I gained clarity on my potential career path and what I aspire to pursue in the future.

Q: What advice would you give to future BJ students?
Before joining the BJ programme, I was a bit hesitant about the technical skills needed, particularly for visual journalism, which I’ve always wanted to pursue. However, the programme provides all the necessary tools and courses to help students develop these skills. As long as you're genuinely interested, I'd say just go for it!
Q: Tell us about Flair Magazine. What inspired it?
The Flair magazine was a capstone project I worked on with my partner, Denise! It focuses on ethnic wear in Hong Kong, highlighting both its preservation and modernisation. In a multicultural city like Hong Kong, we visually explored traditional outfits through photography and gained deeper insights into the cultural and personal significance of ethnic wear through interviews. Our final magazine reflects our creative direction, features stories from our interviewees, and ultimately showcases that what is most authentic to us as individuals is what holds the greatest value.
