How JMSC's Double Major Requirement Creates Versatile Storytellers

Q: Why did you pick JMSC's BJ programme?

I have always had a habit of writing. My experience as chairwoman of the school magazine during my secondary school years sparked my interest in journalism. By considering the international perspective and resources available at HKU, I ultimately chose the BJ programme.

Q: What’s your take on the double major requirement? How does it benefit students?

One of the distinctive features of the JMSC at the University of Hong Kong compared to other universities is the mandatory double major requirement. On one hand, this effectively opens up an additional potential career path. On the other hand, the two majors can complement each other, resulting in a "1+1>2" effect.  Additionally, you can pursue another field of interest while acquiring professional skills. The double major offers greater flexibility and opportunities in terms of academic motivation, practical application, and career planning.

Q: What advice would you give to future BJ students?

Journalism emphasises practical experience. While theoretical knowledge is important, many of my practical skills were acquired through hands-on experience. JMSC is a program that prioritises practical training, with numerous opportunities for hands-on learning embedded in its curriculum. By combining the resources and platforms of the University of Hong Kong, you may be able to accomplish something special. If you choose to join JMSC, do not hesitate—embrace the opportunity and dive in!
