Can China’s News Media Hold the Line?
The Experiences of a Female Journalist in West China

Jiang Xue is a noted investigative journalist in China. For many years a chief reporter for the Shaanxi-based Chinese Business View, she later became head of the newspaper’s opinion page. A law graduate, Jiang has reported for almost two decades on legal affairs, rights defense, civil society development and other issues. Among her celebrated coverage was a series of stories on overreaching police powers, “Police Investigate Couple for Watching Pornography.” In 2003, Jiang was named one of China’s most influential journalists by the state television network, CCTV.
