This year 16 students from the JMSC will contribute to the ABC News on Campus programme.

Each student will have the opportunity to develop  projects for ABC News.

Some will travel to other Asian destinations on reporting visits. The partnership marks the second year of collaboration for ABC News on Campus and HKU.

Under the tutelage of Jim Laurie, an ABC News veteran who now lectures at the JMSC, the students will pitch stories directly to ABC News in New York with the goal of completing packages for use on one or more of ABC News’ platforms.

Since November 2009, students with strong skills in video journalism have carried out field trips and reported for ABC News; their work appearing on line and on air in North America.

This Experiential Learning Project, funded by a Teaching Development Grant, has given students the opportunity to report from Hong Kong, mainland China, the Philippines, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

In June 2010, a group of students visited the New York headquarters of ABC News and rival NBC News where they were briefed by top American journalists.
