Gary Byungseok Kam is an award-winning Seoul-based producer. He is also the first Oscar-nominated documentary producer from South Korea and a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science.
His work includes Planet of Snail (2011), the first Asian documentary that won the Best Feature-Length Documentary Award at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) and In the Absence (2018,) a short documentary that was nominated for an Oscar. Shadow Flowers (2018) won prizes at South Korea’s DMZ International Documentary Film Festival (DMZ Docs), the Taiwan International Documentary Festival (TIDF) and Festival Internacional de Cine Documental de Buenos Aires (FIDBA).
His feature-length documentary The Red Herring (2022), about the embattled former Justice Minister Cho Kuk, was a box office success in South Korea.
Gary is committed not only to the art of storytelling but also supporting independent documentary makers. He has served as a documentary mentor at the Berlinale, Docedge Kolkata, DMZ Docs, Docs by the Sea and EBS International Documentary Festival, as well as a juror/selection committee member at the Whickers Foundation, IDFA Forum and the International Documentary Association.
