New scholarships will be available for JMSC students from next semester.
The South China Morning Post (SCMP) is donating $2 million from a fund operated by the company. The fund is chaired by newspaper philanthropist, Shum Choi Sang.
The money will be used for scholarships for both bachelors and masters students, to subsidise students on unpaid internships in Hong Kong, the mainland or overseas, and to help students taking part in overseas training programmes (including JMSC exchange programmes) or conferences.
The Shum family has a long history of supporting the JMSC. The Shum Wai Yau reading room in Eliot Hall is named after Shum Choi Sang’s father who founded the Wah Kiu Yat Po newspaper.
In addition to his role of publisher of Wah Kiu Yat Po, Shum Choi Sang also held key posts in other media organisations, including Chairman of the Newspaper Society of Hong Kong, Chairman of the Chinese Language Press Institute and Vice-Chairman of the Hong Kong Committee of the International Press Institute. The family is known for its interest in journalism education. Shum Choi Sang holds an Honorary University Fellowship in recognition of his contributions to Hong Kong and academia.
The Wah Kiu Yat Po Readers’ Loan Fund for Post-Secondary School Students was set up in the 1960s to support underprivileged students to further their education. The fund is gradually closing, allowing it to hand over $2 million cash-in-hand to the JMSC.
Cash from that fund will now be available to BJ and MJ students.
“We are especially grateful to Mr. Shum Choi Sang, a SCMP director and long-time supporter of the JMSC, for his support of the contribution,” said JMSC Director, Professor Ying Chan.
