By the end of the semester, you should gain the following:

• A basic understanding of the elements of journalism, the role of news, and the impact of technology on the media.
• Practical knowledge of how journalists collect, process and deliver information, what makes news, and the inner workings of media organizations.
• An ability to analyze news reports critically.

You will examine controversies such as the Twins incident, Bus Uncle, RTHK , and other topics that have gripped the Hong Kong public. Guest speakers from the media will be invited to share their views. You are expected to be regular readers of newspapers including the South China Morning Post, The International Herald Tribue, and as many Chinese newspapers as you can. You should also check out magazines such as Yazhou Zhoukan, Time, Economist and Newsweek.
