JMSC welcomes two distinguished visiting educators

Two distinguished educators will be teaching classes and presenting talks at the JMSC in November and December. Lifen Zhang will be teaching about the mainland Chinese media and Dan Gillmor will be teaching journalism entrepreneurship.

Asia Data Journalism Bootcamp 2014

In this weeklong workshop, taught by NICAR and hosted by the JMSC, you will learn to acquire electronic information, to ask and negotiate for data from official sources, use spreadsheets and databases to analyze information and translate that information into compelling stories.

Documentary by JMSC’s Ruby Yang raises over $900,000 for scholarships

The gala premiere of "My Voice, My Life", a film directed by JMSC documentary teacher, Ruby Yang, that follows the personal journey of four under-privileged Hong Kong high school students, has raised over $900,000 for the University of Hong Kong's First-in-the-Family Education fund.

Building Businesses on Free Government Data

Joel Gurin will talk on Thursday, 30 October from 1-2pm how businesses are putting open government data to work. He will describe different revenue models, the kinds of data found most useful, and what both startups and established businesses can learn from these case studies. He will share insights from the Governance Lab's Open Data 500 project, which is the first comprehensive study of U.S.-based companies that use open government data as a key business resource.

Student-run page that vets protest rumours swamped with ‘likes’

The bi-lingual site, called VerifiedHK, provides fact-checked protest information including reliable news reports, photos and logistics updates through Facebook and Twitter, and also responds to individual requests for verified information through Google.
