China’s Tiananmen Square crisis in 1989 was a defining moment in the information age:  the first time a popular protest in an authoritarian state was broadcast live across the globe. Assignment China: Tiananmen Square tells the behind-the-scenes stories of the American reporters who covered the dramatic events in Beijing that spring. Reported, written and narrated by Mike Chinoy, then CNN’s Beijing Bureau chief, the film contains interviews with journalists including Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn of the New York Times; Jeff Widener, the AP photographer who took the famous picture of a man in front of a row of PLA tanks; Dan Rather of CBS News; Jim Laurie of ABC News; Jaime FlorCruz of Time.  There are also interviewees with former U.S. Secretary of State James Baker, former American ambassadors to China Winston Lord and James Lilley, Tiananmen student leader Wang Dan, and others. The 90-minute film is produced by the U.S.-China Institute at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California. Chinoy is a Senior Fellow of the Institute.
