Four students from the Missouri School of Journalism, the University of Missouri, are attending the JMSC this semester as part of an on-going exchange programme.

Anqi Du, Meng Ren, Hyuk Woo Nam and Steven Hsieh are taking part in an exchange scheme between America’s oldest Journalism School and the JMSC. The scheme has been running for five years; two or more undergraduate students are selected through an interview process to swap places for a semester. The students can study both journalism and courses from other faculties during the exchange.

Anqi Du

Anqi Du is a mainland Chinese senior broadcast journalism student who is going to graduate in December this year. She chose to come to Hong Kong University because of the JMSC’s internship programme which promotes experiential learning.

“I’m interning at YZZK (亞洲周刊) this semester, which is a chinese newsweekly based in Hong Kong,” said Du. “It’s print media so I do research and write factual articles on particular topics.”

“Print is actually not my strength, so I have learned a lot from it, especially about how a magazine business is run and how to cooperate with the editors in the newsroom,” she continued.

“Sometimes I’m assigned to attend news conferences and conduct the interviews. Journalism is a learn-by-doing subject as far as I can see. My experience here has helped me to be clearer about my future career.”

Steven Hsieh is Taiwanese American, from Town and Country in Missouri. He wanted to come and study in Hong Kong as he’s never lived in a city before and was also drawn by the internship element of the exchange programme.

Hsieh is currently interning at Time Out Hong Kong magazine.

“I’ve done some writing, and I helped out with the web a bit,” he said. “The magazine really throws its interns into the deep end, which is fantastic.”

Hsieh is enjoying city life and also the cultural differences between Asia and America: “I feel like I’ve gained valuable communication skills interacting with people from a completely different culture than my own.”

Current BJs interested in taking part in the exchange should speak to Wylie Cheung in the JMSC office.
