Why does it remain a proposal A bridge connecting Hong Kong to the west bank of the Pearl River Delta was introduced nearly two decades ago. Throughout the years, different proposals have been raised but still we have nothing to bridge the 'gap' The Pearl River Delta plays an important role in the economic development of Guangdong Province as well as that of the whole country. It generates about 90 percent of exports, 80 percent of foreign investment and two-third of retail sales in the province. The area has a total population of about 40 million. Throughout the years, different cities or regions have raised proposals regarding the transportation linkage of the east and west. However, probably due to differences in viewpoints and interests, no concerted effort has been made among all parties to find the most suitable way to increase the efficiency of transportation in the region. It is not difficult to understand the situation. Accepting one proposal over another can mean favoring one city or area over another. A high level of coordination and agreement will be required. The involvement of the Guangdong Provincial Government, and ultimately the Central Government will be needed in order to launch any project successfully. Whatever the decision, there is no doubt that Hong Kong, Macao and Zhuhai will be the most important three cities to be considered. |
