Hong Kong people may not regularly make use of the services of the hotel, the hotel does more for the community than just being an architectual landmark. Mr Sunil W. Kuruneru, or Sam as he prefers to be named, is a long term employee with the hotel. Sam started to work as a bus boy for the hotel in 1974. Over the years he has done several jobs within the hotel and he currently is the Assistent Chief Concierge. He explains, with a proud smile, that the Peninsula has been very persistent over the years to keep the service levels up: "The hotel has witnessed many changes over the years, but we have stayed the same".
Sam explains how the Peninsula contributes to the Hong Kong society on a level that is not often known about. Every now and then the hotel will donate funds to aid organizations or they will invite (underpriviliged) groups of citizens to the hotel for a day out. Listen to his comments:
It illustrates that the Peninsula Hotel plays a diverse role within society. Hong Kong people are proud to have the hotel as a historical landmark, its services are mainly benefitting an international audience and behind the scenes the hotel donates and supports society.
