Hong Kong - JMSC - They are illegal. Their owners break the law every day. But dog cafés have proliferated above Hong Kong's busy city streets since Paris Café opened its doors in 1995. 

Many hide themselves on upper floors. That does not deter Hong Kong pet-lovers.

Hon, who declined to be photographed for this article, is the owner of a popular dog café in Causeway Bay, one of the busiest shopping neighbourhoods on Hong Kong island.

He says more Hong Kong people own pets today, which is one of the reasons behind the bloom of the dog café business in recent years.

"Many of my friends are planning to raise a dog rather than to raise a child,” he said.

Hon says the pet theme is a sound business choice for a café owner facing considerable competition. Listen to his views:
