Hong Kong art is quite fascinating in the perspective of Art history. It is one of the few case studies of art during historical transition where everyone knows the precise date of Hong Kong's handover long before but no one knows exactly what will happen afterwards.
The anxiety was reflected in art. Art
works during the periods of 80s and 90s reflected a particularly temporal theme of
uncertainty about the future and the search for identity.

Carl Cheng's perspective
“Hong Kong audience likes to watch undercover movie, they relate it to the Hong Kong people’s identity of relationship to both Britain and China, which is very interesting culture, unique to Hong Kong.”- Carl Cheng

The search of identity is
still ongoing. Hong Kong government has a sense that Hong Kong’s identity is in crisis and has been trying to brand Hong Kong to be Asia’s world city. However, as Professor David Clarke pointed out, Hong Kong can’t find an identity by just being a place to buy and sell stuff; it is not something specific to Hong Kong. Culture identity requires creative industries.
