COURT TO CAMPUS

Founded in 1978, SCAD has vast experience preserving historic structures. Some of its most recent restorations include a 19th-century synagogue, an abandoned military hospital and the oldest railroad depot in the US. In September 2010, the projected opening date for its Hong Kong campus, the college will add the former Magistracy to that list.

SCAD plans to invest more than HK$100 million in conserving and equipping the building. In-depth details of how and where the money will be spent were not available as of press time, however, Paula Wallace, president of the college, said much of the original building will be conserved according to government specifications.

“Beyond conserving a historic landmark for future generations, SCAD-Hong Kong presents educational, cultural and economic opportunities for students, faculty and alumni, as well as the local Hong Kong community,” said Wallace.

When the school opens, daily tours will be offered to the public while a prominent educational and historical display will serve as a reminder of the building’s distinguished past.

In addition, it will also be part of a new creative industries cluster where various projects such as the Mei Ho House, which is being transformed into a City Hostel, and Lai Chi Kok Hospital, which will become a Chinese arts and culture centre, will bring life to the district.
