The Central Police Station Compound in Central has been protected as one of the last physical evidences of Hong Kong's colonial history. Especially after the protest against the demolishment of Star Ferry, Hong Kong people started to rethink about the previous urban development methods of the city. The society is expecting better ways to preserve historical buildings and Hong Kong people’s collective memories.

This year’s architectural exhibition, titled "Refabricating City" opened the compound, in large extent, to the general public for the first time.
Meanwhile, a controversial design proposed by the famous Swiss architecture firm Herzog and de Meuron put the compound’s future under the spotlight again.
So, what happened during the exhibition? Why was the proposal not successful?

The Hong Kong Shenzhen Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism was held in these two cities synchronously from February to March, 2008. According to the curator of the exihibition, Professor Wang Weijen, who is currently teaching at MIT as a visiting professor, it was meaningful, rewarding, yet challenging to arrange the exihibition in the Central Police Station compound.
