Recent years, replying to the requests from NGOs of gay, Hong Kong government is constantly working on improving the relation between the public and gay people and providing chances for people to know about gay people, organizations as well as gay rights movement in Hong Kong. Here comes a slideshow for the Equal Opportunities (Sexual Orientation) Awareness Day.
It's the second year that Homg Affair Department held the Equal Opportunites Awareness Day for the public to know more about the homosexuality in Hong Kong and this kind of communication chances for gay people and the public will be created by government continually said the assistant secretary for Home Affair Wilson Kwong Ka-Fung. "During the past ten years, the government did a lot of job to support the local NGOs of gay people, and donated HK$50,000 to 60,000 to at least ten gay organizations annually. Meanwhile, since last year, we have started to hold the awareness day in order to let more people realise gay people. People's understanding is the base of legislation." Mr.Kwong added. However, government's efforts are not enough to meet the needs of those people who still suffered from the discrimination of sexual orientation.Connie Chan Nam, who has been active in the gay rights movements for thirteen years in Hong Kong believed that government in Hong Kong was not brave enough to challenge the tops, but government's attitude on anti-discrimination legislation of sexual orientation was still the key point in Hong Kong. "Public education is important, but moreover we should know legislation itself is a kind of public eduaction." said Connie. In fact, most protests voice for homosexuality in Hong Kong are from the church group. Many Christians hold the belief that homosexual is sinful according to the Bible and gay rights movement are also damge to the current society structure. Meanwhile, beacuse Hong Kong was once the colony of the UK, many collages here were established by Christian church, and untill now , more than 80% people collages in Hong Kong are with church backgroud. However, although religion's power affect thinking in this society a lot, the situation is gradually changed during the past decade. Rose Wu and her institute, Hong Kong Christian Institute are trying their best to help the Christian to change mind on gay people and to love those minorities. "Since 1970s , traditional male-dominated and heterosexuality theology had gradually changed into diversities in the western, and now Hong Kong need changes too. Traditional belief doesn't equal to the truth.Truth should be diversities, that is to say, all kinds of people could receive the grace of God although they holds different opinions. Besides, we should admit that many gay people are Christians too. However, just like we fight for the women’s right; the legislation for gay people still has a long way to go." Rose said when she joined the awareness day movement. In this 20th May, there will be a march for the first International Day against Homophobia in Hong Kong. It is said that more than 350 people will join in the match which aims to support anti-discrimination of sexual orientation ation.Although many people are not so optimistic for winning the ordinance in a short time, the gay rights movement are never going back in this city. -END- Trackback(0)
