In 1950s, the British government developed Kwun Tong as the first satellite city to settle large number of mainland migrants. Many factories and public housing estates were built up at this time. In thirty years, its population was increased from 1,000 to 720,000. Nowadays, Kwun Tong has 560,000 populations, which is the second highest among 19 districts in Hong Kong.
In 1990s, Hong Kong manufacturing industry was declining; many factories moved to the mainland and left the buildings empty. These buildings were renovated to warehouse or offices. Millennium City Phase I , a luxury commercial building was built in 1998, was the landmark of the new development of Kwun Tong. After that, more and more commercial buildings were built. Two years ago, a modern shopping mall APM , which targeted at young generation, was opened. It thoroughly changed the low-cost consumption in Kwun Tong. In the next ten years, more significant changes may be seen under the redevelopment.
