<p>He will host a talk at the New Book Release Presentation of the fair 2011 to discuss the poor grasp of English by many in Hong Kong and what is needed to rectify  it.</p>
<p>Kalb is the author of the recently published <em>You Can Write Better English</em>.</p>

<p>The course is open to anyone who has reporting experience but is a beginner in video reporting.</p>
<p>In the digital age, reporters are increasingly asked to construct video and multimedia stories on top of their print work. How can one become an effective visual journalist while navigating this new workload?</p>
<p>Learn how to manage reporting in the field with this quick introduction to visual storytelling using simple and professional equipment.</p>
<p>Instructors <a href="http://www.andrewlih.com/Welcome.html">Andrew Lih</a> and <a href="http://lamivo.com/">Lam Vo</a>, have worked with reporters and students in the US and Asia on quick, effective strategies for visual storytelling.</p>

Experienced reporters, but beginners in video. Even those with some video experience but looking for streamlining and becoming more efficient will find the session useful.</p>

Attendees will understand the basics of visual literacy and be able to effectively shoot, report and script short videos stories using the BBC Five Shot method. Takeaways include a field checklist of how to produce these stories in the field.</p>

Attendees are encouraged to bring any existing audio-visual equipment and kit (amateur or professional) for advice and hints on how to use it.</p>

It will cover digital research, using public records and databases to find stories, computer-assisted reporting, in-depth interviewing, beating the competition, and writing stories that make an impact. It will feature guest lecturers and students will report on live, cross-border stories.</p>

<a href="http://jmsc.hku.hk/2009/10/adjuncts/#cpk">Chan Pui-king</a>, former editor-in-chief of <em>Next Magazine</em> who has lead teams on investigative projects involving political, corporate and business issues. She has nearly two decades of experience in media management and has written a guide on access to public information in Hong Kong that has become an authoritative reference for journalists.</p>
<p><strong>Pre-requisites: </strong><br />
A basic understanding of journalism, acquired from school or work.</p>

<li>Working professionals (other than working journalists) should have experience in dealing with the press such as answering press enquiries or preparing press releases or statements</li>

<p>The course aims to enhance the creative power and communication ability of young people by exposing them to the fast changing world of information technology.  Through hands-on exercises and classroom instruction in the use of audio and video media tools, the course will help prepare students for their college application and future careers.</p>
<p>The course will be taught by professors from Hong Kong University and media professionals who have worked for leading international media organisations. All teachers have extensive experience of working with young people at both university and high school level.</p>
<p>‘Career Discovery’ has three major components<br />
•     Lectures on creativity, media technology and communications<br />
•     Workshops and lab work in English writing, photo story-telling, video production and multimedia design and publishing<br />
•     Field trips to explore the rich history and cultural environment of Shanghai</p>
<p>Course Outcomes<br />
Participants who successfully complete the programme will:<br />
• Produce an individual portfolio of multimedia work created under the supervision of our teaching staff;<br />
• Acquire multimedia skills that will be useful for course and project work in any disciplinary area of study at university level;<br />
• Enhance their understanding of communication processes and skills for social and career development;<br />
• Receive a certificate of attendance issued by the JMSC, The University of Hong Kong.</p>
<p>Who Should Enroll<br />
Senior high school students on the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and abroad. College students who may want to have a rich and challenging experience in communications are welcome.</p>

<h2>About the Instructor:</h2>
<p>Dr. Michael Coyne’s photographs have  appeared in prominent  publications around the world including <em>National  Geographic</em>, German <em>Geo</em>,  <em>Time, Life</em> and <em>Newsweek</em>. He has had a number of  successful books  published of his work and won awards from groups such  as the American  National Press Photographers Association, Overseas  Press Club of  America and the FCC Hong Kong Human Rights Press Awards. He was  awarded a  Doctor of Philosophy degree from Griffith  University in  October 2008.</p>
<p>Dr Coyne is under contract to  the New York photo agency,  Black Star.  For the last 30 years he  has covered international events  such as the Iran Iraq war,  Palestinian Israeli conflict, East Timor  independence, the Tiananmen Square  uprising, the Rwandan massacre and the recent  protests in Bangkok.</p>
<p>He  is currently working on a book about villages around the world   documenting phenomena such as globalisation, dispossession of land, loss   of culture and mass migration.</p>

<p>This course teaches students the  basics skills of photography. They will learn focusing, exposure,  composing and framing. Participants will also be given useful tips about  photographing people and landscapes. <p>This course explores different  photographic techniques and purposes/outcomes. It will enable you to be  able to identify good practices and minimise poor photographic outcomes.  Students will learn how to produce effective portraits, which  illuminate the subject in terms of personality as well as appearance. By  the end of the course you will be able to effectively tell a story or  illustrate an issue through photography.</p>

<p>This course is a six‐session practical guide for working journalists and designers interested in developing the skills to create Business and Finance charts and information graphics.  The course will provide the foundation in understanding numerical information and financial indicators, working with charts, visual storytelling and the process of designing and editing engaging information graphics. We will learn simple and advanced Excel and Illustrator techniques and demonstrate those skills in practical exercises, including an advanced hands-on project.</p>
