With applications for the 2016–2017 Master of Journalism (MJ) programme now open, the JMSC will be holding an Information Session for prospective students.

Thomas Abraham, Director of the Master of Journalism programme

Thomas Abraham, Director of the MJ programme, will give an introductory presentation covering the programme’s structure, courses and entry requirements. MJ hopefuls will get a taste of what it’s like to be a live news anchor through a broadcast demonstration, and see the equipment available for students to use during the course of their studies. There will also be a news photo competition, with the best entry winning a JMSC hoodie.

The JMSC’s MJ programme takes in between 70 and 80 students a year from a variety of countries and professional backgrounds, and is taught by a faculty of experienced journalists and media scholars. Many JMSC students have come from other professions and have taken the course to embark on new careers in journalism. Graduates have been hired by the world’s leading media organisations, including Bloomberg, CNN, and The Wall Street Journal.

The centre’s teaching philosophy reflects the needs of both traditional journalism and today’s changing media landscape, preparing students to practise accurate, honest and high-quality journalism on any and all media platforms.

The programme offers specialisation in business and financial journalism, and a wide range of elective courses, including public health reporting, covering China, international reporting and documentary filmmaking. A course on social media analytics for journalists is also being offered for the first time in Spring 2016.

The application deadline for the 2016–2017 academic year is 31 January, 2016. To register for the Information Session, please email jmscmj@hku.hk or call (+852) 3917 4113.
