<p>Cedric is the main coder behind the JMSC&#8217;s <a href="http://github.com/JMSCHKU/Social">social media data project</a> and its <a href="http://research.jmsc.hku.hk/social/obs.py/sinaweibo/">WeiboScope</a>. He is also a participant in its open government data project.</p>
<p>Since joining the JMSC is February 2010, Cedric has worked on the <a href="http://cmp.hku.hk/">China Media Project </a> website and provided expertise on technical matters. He is the teaching assistant for the data journalism course.</p>
<p>Prior to coming to Hong Kong, Cedric worked for <a href="http://cbc.radio-canada.ca/">CBC/Radio-Canada</a> in his hometown of Montreal.</p>
<p>From 2007 to 2009, he was assigned to <a href="www.radio-canada.ca/">Radio-Canada.ca</a> and won acclaim for his work on its televised <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOgqobWb9Q0">live electoral maps</a> in 2008.</p>
<p>His data projects with <a href="http://www.lapresse.ca/"><em>La Presse</em></a> during the last general election in Canada, including a <a href="http://www.cyberpresse.ca/actualites/elections-federales/political-financing-map/">map of political financing</a>, were viewed by more than half a million pairs of eyes and won him the Canadian Online Publishing Award for best cross-platform initiative.</p>
<p>Cedric completed undergraduate studies in Biochemistry and Computer Science at McGill University in 2004, and is currently putting the finishing touches to a part-time Master of Design (Interaction Design Specialism) at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design.</p>

Ying Chan, an award-winning journalist and Hong Kong native, established The University of Hong Kong's Journalism and Media Studies Centre in September 1999.

She set up the first professional postgraduate journalism programme in Hong Kong, launched Hong Kong's first fellowships for working journalists, and forged extensive ties between HKU and the news industry.

Chan's honours include a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University, a George Polk Award for journalistic excellence and an International Press Freedom Award by the Committee to Protect Journalists.

She taught at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and was on the board of the Asian American Journalists Association.

Chan has a bachelor's degree (social sciences) from HKU and a Masters from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.]]></description>

<p>Ying Chan is a writer, educator, and the founding director of the Journalism and Media Studies Centre.</p>
<p>As an academic unit of HKU, the JMSC offers professional graduate and undergraduate degrees in journalism, and MPhil and PhD degrees.</p>
<p>She was also the founding dean (2003-2011) of the journalism school at <a href="http://www.university-directory.eu/China/Shantou-University.html">Shantou University</a> in China.</p>
<p>Prior to joining HKU in 1998, Chan spent 23 years working as a journalist in New York City, where she reported for the <a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/"><em>New York Daily News</em></a>, <a href="http://www.nbc.com/news-sports/">NBC News</a>, and a number of Chinese language dailies.</p>
<p>Chan’s honours include a <a href="http://nieman.harvard.edu/NiemanFoundation/NiemanFellowships/FellowshipProgramAtAGlance.aspx">Nieman Fellowship</a> at Harvard University, a <a href="http://www.liu.edu/polk/">George Polk</a> Award for journalistic excellence and an International Press Freedom Award by the <a href="http://www.cpj.org/">Committee to Protect Journalists</a>.</p>

<p>Over the years Kevin has produced work for industry leading and innovative companies such as <a href="http://www.ubi.com/">Ubisoft</a>, <a href="http://nowsports.now-tv.com/nowSports/?l=en">NOW Sports</a> (HK), <a href="http://revision3.com/">Revision3</a>, <a href="http://www.g4tv.com/">G4techTV</a>, <a href="https://www.iconoculture.com/US/Index.aspx">Iconoculture</a> and <a href="http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/index.jsp">DirecTV</a>.</p>
<p>At Ubisoft, Kevin produced and developed video game teasers and the <em>Developer Diary</em> series for the AAA title Tom Clancy&#8217;s <em>Endwar</em>, garnering over 200,000 views.</p>
<p>During his time at Revision3, Kevin co-created the popular internet show <em>inDigital: Your Life in Gear</em>, a show about the newest in gadgets for technophiles.</p>
<p>The show became the second highest viewed show of its kind averaging 80,000 downloads every release. As a veteran of the media industry, he is always dreaming of innovative techniques to balance creativity and plausibility.</p>
<p>Kevin was born and raised in Los Angeles and educated in the USA and Hong Kong.</p>

<p>Rusty Todd comes to the University of Hong Kong from the University of Texas Journalism School, where he is a professor specializing in editing and business journalism. He holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University. Todd lived in Hong Kong for nine years in the 1980s and &#8217;90s, when he was a reporter and news editor at The Asian Wall Street Journal and an executive with Dow Jones/Telerate. He was founding editor of the Dow Jones Emerging Market Report. Earlier, he served as state editor at the Austin American-Statesman and city editor at the Daily Missourian at the University of Missouri. Todd and his wife Sarah have two daughters, both born in Hong Kong.</p>

John Young is former associate director of the JMSC. Before coming to HKU, he served as the Deputy Director of California's Office of Trade and Investment for China and Hong Kong.

Prior to that, he served as Special Assistant and Counsel to San Francisco Mayor Willie L. Brown Jr. He oversaw the development of the mayor's first annual budget, implementing legislative and administrative actions that enabled the Brown administration to transform the previous administration's budget deficit to a budget surplus.

He is also an experienced freelance journalist. He has a Juris Doctor degree from Stanford Law School, and a BA in Political Science and East Asian Studies from University of California at Berkeley.]]></description>

<p>Nancy Tong has been producing documentaries for 30 years. She began her career as a news reporter in Hong Kong with HK-TVB.  She moved to New York City in 1981 and worked as an independent film producer.</p>
<p>Among her dozens of projects were <em>Who Killed Vincent Chin?</em> which was nominated in 1989 for an Academy Award;<em> In the Name of the Emperor,</em> which was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the San Francisco International Film Festival in 1995; and <em>Cancer: From Evolution to Revolution,</em> which won a George Foster Peabody Award in 2000.</p>
<p>From 1999 &#8211; 2007, Tong taught documentary production at The School of Creative Media at the City University of Hong Kong. Her current projects include teaching media production to Muslim women in China, Pakistan, and Indonesia;  ten short documentaries for the Museum of Chinese in America in New York City; and a documentary on a reconstruction project in the Forbidden City of Beijing for The China Heritage Fund.</p>

Doreen Weisenhaus teaches media law and ethics. Prior to joining the Journalism and Media Studies Centre in 2000, she was city editor of The New York Times. She also was the first legal editor of The New York Times Magazine before becoming its law and politics editor. Before that, Weisenhaus was editor-in-chief of The National Law Journal, a leading publication for lawyers in the U.S. that won several major journalism awards during her tenure.

She also was a prosecutor in New York City, a television news producer in Chicago and a reporter for the Milwaukee Journal. She holds a Juris Doctor degree from Northwestern University's School of Law and a Bachelor of Science degree from the Medill School of Journalism, also at Northwestern.  She is the author of the book, Hong Kong Media Law: A Guide for Journalists and Media Professionals (HKU Press 2007).]]></description>

She also was the first legal editor of <em>The New York Times Magazine</em> before becoming its law and politics editor. Before that, Weisenhaus was editor-in-chief of <em>The National Law Journal</em>, a leading publication for lawyers in the U.S. that won several major journalism awards during her tenure.</p>
<p>She also was a prosecutor in New York City, a television news producer in Chicago and a reporter for the <em>Milwaukee Journal</em>. She holds a Juris Doctor degree from Northwestern University&#8217;s School of Law and a Bachelor of Science degree from the Medill School of Journalism, also at Northwestern.  She is the author of the book, <em>Hong Kong Media Law: A Guide for Journalists and Media Professionals</em> (HKU Press 2007).</p>

Rusty Todd comes to the University of Hong Kong from the University of Texas Journalism School, where he is a professor specializing in editing and business journalism. He holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University.

Todd lived in Hong Kong for nine years in the 1980s and 90s, when he was a reporter and news editor at The Asian Wall Street Journal and an executive with Dow Jones/Telerate. He was founding editor of the Dow Jones Emerging Market Report. Earlier, he served as state editor at the Austin American-Statesman and city editor at the Daily Missourian at the University of Missouri.

He is currently an editor at the Texas Observer. Todd and his wife Sarah have two daughters, both born in Hong Kong.]]></description>

Miklos Sukosd has been academic director for the Center for Media and Communication Studies at Central European University in Hungary, where he was also an associate professor. He has also taught at ELTE University in Hungary, and at Princeton and Harvard universities in the U.S. He is the author or editor of numerous academic texts. His research interests include political communication and democratic performance of the media in post-communist states; media law, regulation and democratization in post-communist states; environmental politics, and communications. He has a Ph.D. in political science from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and an MA in sociology from Harvard.]]></description>

<p>Previously he was academic director of the <a href="http://cmcs.ceu.hu/">Center for Media and Communication Studies</a> at Central European University, where he also taught as associate professor of political science.</p>
<p>He served in major international media research and consultancy projects, including as Chair of the COST A30 Action <em>East of West: Setting a New Central Eastern European Media Research Agenda </em>(2005–2009), and key expert in the EU project <em>An independent study on indicators for media pluralism </em>(2008–2009).</p>
<p>His research focuses on media in China and post-communist Central and Eastern Europe; journalism, sustainability and the environment; and media and Buddhism. He has published over 20 books and several book chapters and journal articles about media and politics.</p>
<p>Miklos has an MA in sociology from <a href="http://www.harvard.edu/">Harvard University</a> and a PhD in political science from the <a href="http://mta.hu/english/">Hungarian Academy of Sciences</a>.</p>
<p>He has received several research awards and fellowships, including Fulbright Fellowship at Columbia University, Japan Foundation Fellowship at the University of Tokyo, ACLS Research Scholarship at the Woodrow Wilson Center (Washington, D.C.), and a General Research Fund grant, Hong Kong.</p>
