Department: Journalism and Media Studies Centre
Closing Date: May 1, 2013

The Position

Applications are invited for appointment as Professor in the Journalism and Media Studies Centre (JMSC) from late-2013. The selected candidate will be appointed as the Centre Director.

The JMSC is a teaching and research department offering professional programmes leading to the Bachelor of Journalism and the Master of Journalism degrees, and research programmes leading to M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees through the Faculty of Social Sciences. Its graduates have been highly successful and now hold positions at major media organizations throughout the world.

As a place where faculty, staff and students are blending traditional principles with Digital Age innovations, its director must have a deep understanding of how the collision of journalism and technology is creating new opportunities even as it challenges the industry’s financial structure. The appointee will also take leadership in areas such as the continued development of the graduate and undergraduate curricula, recruitment and management of teaching faculty, enhancement of research and scholarship, fundraising, networking with the profession, and international outreach.

Candidate Profile
Candidates should have an outstanding reputation as a scholar in journalism and media studies or an internationally recognized track record as a journalist who has occupied leadership positions in major media organizations or other experience highly relevant to this position. Whether they come from an academic background or a professional one, they should have a passion for teaching and research, and be committed to involvement in the journalism profession. Ideal candidates will have substantial international experience, an advanced degree, teaching and administrative experience within a University setting, as well as an understanding of journalism practice in China and Asia. Knowledge of Chinese is desirable.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of basic salary, as well as housing benefits, leave, and medical benefits. At current rates, salary tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.

Application and Nomination
The University of Hong Kong invites applications and nominations for appointment as Professor/Director of the Journalism and Media Studies Centre. Review of applications and nominations will commence on 1 May and continue until the post is filled. Interested persons are invited to submit their materials by email to the address below on or before 1 May 2013:

At the centre of Asia, it is both Chinese and international, traditional and cosmopolitan, old-world and cutting-edge.

It is the media and information hub of the region and serves as the doorstep to China. It is a stage for world-class films, performing arts and cultural events. Put simply, Hong Kong offers front-row seats to the evolution of the 21st century.

It is little wonder that JMSC programmes are eagerly sought after by the next generation of international journalists. We invite you to apply.
