Information Architecture for Effective Outreach and Communications – Instructor: Darcy Christ

In the digital age, organizations face the challenge of managing the ever-growing volume of information under their charge. They also need to find ways to share the information internally and publicly for the advancement of organizational goals. Websites are widely used for outreach and information dissemination, but they are just one piece of the puzzle in effective information delivery.

Information Architecture (IA) is the art and science of organizing information to make it both findable and usable by stakeholders. It is also the art of creating websites in ways that would maximize the potential of digital content delivery and outreach.

This course will introduce the main concepts behind IA, its history and role in web development. But it will also explore how the related fields of content strategy, usability design and social media strategy have enhanced the approach but not altered the principles of IA.

13. Do I need to apply for a visa if studying in HK?

Non-local student need to obtain a visa in order to study in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Immigration Department issues student visas to applicants enrolling in a full-time course in the University. Details of the visa application procedure are available from HKU’s Centre of Development and Resources (CEDARS) website. Students intending to stay for more than 6 months should obtain a Hong Kong Identity Card after their arrival.

14. What is the cost of living in Hong Kong?

It can be difficult to give a precise estimate of the likely cost of living for overseas applicants because it varies depending on the type of accommodation selected and other factors. For students living in on-campus postgraduate residences, approximately US$1,000-$1,200 per month is required to cover food, lodging and general living expenses (excluding tuition fees). If living off-campus, students can expect to budget more as accommodations can be more expensive.

15. Can I live in a dormitory? How do I apply?

Accommodation for non-local postgraduates is available at St. John’s College, Graduate House, Morrison Hall and Pokfield Road Residences. Since on-campus accommodation is highly competitive, not all newly-arriving postgraduates can get a place. Overseas applicants may be required to provide proof that they are able to support themselves financially throughout the course at the time of their application for student visa. Postgraduate students can apply for on-campus residence by visiting the HKU Postgraduate Housing website.

Public Health Communication Programme

The Public Health Communication Programme received two research grants during 2011. One from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was for a white paper on a communications strategy for “One Health”, a disease prevention approach that focuses on the links between humans and animals and the environment in the emergence of new diseases, and tries to use communication to reduce the risk of new diseases emerging. This communication strategy was presented by Thomas Abraham at a workshop organized at FAO headquarters in Rome, and attended by communication specialists from a number of UN organizations. Thomas Abraham also held workshops for the FAO in Bangladesh and Indonesia. He also served as an expert on a communication consultation meeting on the Asia Pacific Strategy for Emerging Infectious Diseases held at the WHO regional headquarters in Manila in October.

The second grant was from the University of Hong Kong’s University Development Fund to expand the current programme on risk communication. A major focus of work will be creating an on line risk communication programme targeting health communications officers in Ministries of Health in the region. This will help countries meet their obligations under the International Health Regulations to have risk communication capacity to respond to infectious disease threats and other disasters.

Thomas Abraham also spoke at the World Conference of Science Journalists in Qatar in June on polio as an “underground epidemic”.

His publications for the year include two peer reviewed journal publications: “The Chronicle of a Disease Foretold, Pandemic H1N1 and the Construction of a Global Health Security Threat” ( Political Studies, December 2011), and “Lessons from the Pandemic: The Need for New Tools for Risk and Outbreak Communication” (Emerging Health Threats Journal, October 2011).

The alumni featured include:

Sarah Chakales, MJ 2009, now a writer for CNN International in Hong Kong.

“As a Hong Kong based-writer for CNN International, I script television stories on business and market related developments in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as around the world. Asia is quickly becoming a powerful economic force on the global stage, so it’s exciting to have the opportunity to follow that action so closely.”

Lorea Solabarrieta, MJ 2010, Business News Anchor and Reporter for CCTV News in Beijing.

“Taking my Masters at the JMSC was one of the best things to have happened to me!”

Stuart Biggs, MJ 2004, reporter for Bloomberg News in Tokyo.

“The JMSC experience has been invaluable,” he said. “Years into my professional life, my opinion of the programme hasn’t changed. Perhaps the opposite is true. The more I find myself in complex situations, the more I remember the importance of understanding the issues, ethics and our responsibility as journalists that the professors drilled into us.”

Caroline Malone, MJ 2008, of Al Jazeera English in Doha.

“As Senior Producer, I’ll be both output producing (researching, writing, editing pictures, commissioning graphics) and package producing (putting own stories together and voicing). In the future I may also be doing the same out in the field,” she said.

Olga Wong, MPhil 2005, Senior Reporter for the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong.

“My days with the JMSC are memorable. The wide-range of learning opportunities offered is precious to both my personal and career development,” she said of her time at HKU. “I was also overwhelmed by the chance of meeting veteran journalists and experienced research fellows from around the world, with whom I was encouraged to exchange ideas on a daily basis.”

Kiu Lam, MJ 2003, Internal Communications Associate Manager at Hong Kong Disneyland.

The Journalism and Media Studies Centre (JMSC) at The University of Hong Kong began as a graduate-level program in 1998 and later added a Bachelor of Journalism programme. At the undergraduate level, we offer 35 courses on topics including news reporting and writing for all forms of traditional and new media, media law and ethics, and journalism history and traditions from regional and global perspectives. The curriculum includes a strong element of instruction in digital media, which are changing the nature of journalism. Special courses are also available, including Independent Study and Chinese News Writing.

Journalists should have a broad education, so we require Bachelor of Journalism students to acquire a second major. We also require students to participate in internship programs. These requirements, along with exchange programmes with leading universities in the U.S., Europe, Asia and elsewhere, as well as other special programmes and seminars held throughout the year, help us equip our students with the abilities they need to become the next generation of leaders in the rapidly changing field of journalism.

The scholarships will cover full tuition for the 2012-13 academic year, and will be awarded on the basis of academic merit or outstanding experience.

The assignment would make a hardened war correspondent tremble: cover a pair of science camps spent locked up overnight in a museum with 300 teenagers on two consecutive Fridays.

The assignment would make a hardened war correspondent tremble: cover a pair of science camps spent locked up overnight in a museum with 300 teenagers.

But student journalists from the JMSC picked up the challenge and produced a fine multi-media file documenting the activities of hundreds of high school students in what the University of Hong Kong (HKU) organisers described as “No ordinary field-trip”.

Dubbed A Night at the Science Museum, the pioneering two-part festival of hands-on science and engineering activities plus inter-school competitions was not an easy event to report.

View a selection of reports here

View the website produced for the event here

Key to success rested on choosing the right tools for the job and meticulous planning. Reporting more than 12 hours of continuous activity — and keeping track of video, text, photos and audio files — posed a logistical challenge.

Students were required to build a tower from spaghetti, tape and string, topped by a marshmallow. The tallest won.

Making sense of a team challenge involving uncooked spaghetti, string, duct tape and a marshmallow required dexterity with words as well as strong images.

Covering a competition that sent 300 students hurtling around all four floors of the museum collecting clues lent itself to video and stills photography — and required careful positioning to catch more than blurred images of sprinting teens.

In between all this mass activity, students attended workshops providing hands on experiments, enjoying a range of often bizarre activities.

One group tossed eggs off a balcony. Another raised finger-prints from a series of potential murder weapons ranging from a baseball bat to a wine bottle.

Some students flailed around in darkness — experiencing a Hong Kong without the glare of light pollution that has become ubiquitous. That was not a workshop that lent itself to photography.

LIVE ON THE WEB – NO ROOM FOR ERROR

Tutor Kevin Lau (left) and MJ Charles Lui stream the opening hour live

The organisers, HKU’s faculties of Engineering and Science, wanted the opening hour or so of both evenings covered live.

No problem.

That job fell to MJ Charles Lui, supervised by JMSC lecturer Kevin Lau. See his streamcasts here.

The rest of the team got busy photographing, audio-and video-recording and writing up the antics of the youthful participants.

They recorded and captured footage for a short video wrap to be ready before breakfast and clips for a longer documentary to be put together afterwards.

They shot still photographs, wrote up quotes, taped audio soundbites, filed text, photos and video to Facebook and compiled audio-visual reports.

Speed was of the essence but patience was required. Coaxing meaningful quotes from teenagers was no easy task as any parent can attest.

Say something! JMSC Student Journalist Elisa Chan interviews teens

In a temporary newsroom set up in the Science Museum’s Ground Floor computer room, JMSC faculty news edited and filed material as the student reporters checked in and out to edit, upload and tag their material on a set of labelled laptops.

Kevin Lau ran video. Teaching Assistant and multi-media producer AJ Libunao directed photography.

Experiential learning — or learning through doing — is a hallmark of the JMSC experience.

Both graduate and undergraduate students put into practice what they had learned in class during the museum assignment.

The Vice Chancellor, who visited the news room on the second night and inspected work in progress, declared himself impressed.

Professor Tsui arrived just at one of the busiest parts of the evening.

Half the JMSC team were out reporting but the other half had hunkered down to write, process, edit and file their material.

The idea behind the nightcamps at the Science Museum, said Professor Paul Cheung of HKU’s Engineering Department, a driving force in getting the unprecedented event off the ground, was to give students a taste of what awaited those who planned to go on to study science subjects at college.

“Youngsters like to stay up all night and sleep all day so this was thought to be an ideal way of reaching them,” Cheung said.

Many teens did in fact grab some sleep. But only a handful of the JMSC student journalists got much more than a quick catnap on the newsroom floor. But only once their work was done. The others meanwhile, worked on until the sun rose over Kowloon.

Throughout the night, student-journalists needed to remember to shoot video footage both for the wrap and for a longer documentary to be edited afterwards. JMSC tutor and web video specialist Kevin Lau had to edit the wrap fast in order to meet such a tight deadline.

Students taking Online Journalism were set a challenge: experience life as a wheelchair-bound user of the University of Hong Kong campus.

They were divided into groups, issued with a wheelchair and given a route to negotiate.

As this selection of reports shows, the student reporters found the university’s facilities for wheelchair users fell far short of the ideal.

Photojournalism is an integral element of the journalism skills taught at the JMSC.

In an increasingly convergent media environment, the ability of journalists to illustrate a story with images is essential.

From autumn 2011, the JMSC presents Photojournalism @ HKU, a year-long tour of photojournalism from its history as a documentary medium to its present as a key element of both traditional and on-line interactive journalism.

The programme includes a student exhibition, a short course for the public by an award-winning photojournalist and a lecture series by masters of photojournalism from around the world.

The lecture series features Liu Heung Shing, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer and an expert on the archiving of photos and Nick Ut, also a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer who took the Vietnam War-era Napalm Girl photo.

Others speakers include Dutch photojournalist Kees Metselaar, who has covered the fall of dictators Marcos and Suharto, Michael Coyne, a veteran photojournalist who as covered conflict in many of the world’s hotspots, and Shahidul Alam, who uses photography and new media in support of social activism.

Kees has covered the fall of two dictators in Asia, Marcos in the Philippines and Suharto in Indonesia, got his feet wet in numerous floods and walked with the mujahedin in Afghanistan. He will speak about his experiences and the big changes in photojournalism since the mid-eighties when he began.

Kees Metselaar graduated as a scientist from the Free University in Amsterdam before he became a full time photojournalist in the mid eighties. His first big story was the fall of dictator Ferdinand Marcos in the Philippines in 1986. He photographed famine in the Sudan and the mujahedin in Afghanistan. In the early 1990s, he moved his base to Hong Kong to concentrate on Asia. He was in Bangladesh when a giant cyclone killed more than 100,000 people and those pictures went around the world.

He was in Indonesia during the fall of another dictator, President Suharto, and has travelled ith his cameras all over the vast archipelago. He is represented by the Dutch agency, Hollandse Hoogte. He has exhibited in Europe and Hong Kong. More recently in Hong Kong, he has been documenting the disappearing street markets and life styles of Central and Western Districts.

Nick Ut, the legendary Associated Press photographer, is the author of the 1973 Pulitzer Prize-winning picture of a nine-year old girl fleeing a napalm attack during the Vietnam War. He will speak about his photography career which has bought him from the battle fields of Vietnam to the glamour of Hollywood.

Nick Ut, also known as Ut Cong Huynh, was born in Vietnam. He began to take photographs for the AP when he was 16, just after his older brother, another AP photographer was killed in combat in 1965.

He won the 1973 Pulitzer Prize for his photo of Phan Thi Kim Phuc, an iconic image which helped turn American public opinion against the war. Ut has since worked for the AP in Tokyo, South Korea, and Hanoi and is now based in Los Angeles. He maintains contact with Kim Phuc, who now lives in Canada. Ut is also known for his portraits of Hollywood movie stars.

LIU HEUNG SHING – The Power of Images and The Road to 1911
影像的力量－1911「大道之行」辛亥革命百周年影像展公開講座
Date: Tuesday, August 30, 2011
Time: 6 – 7.30 pm
Venue: Rayson Huang Theatre, The University of Hong Kong
Language: Putonghua

Liu Heung Shing is a Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist and former foreign correspondent.

His talk coincides with the opening of a five-week exhibition at the HKU Museum, The Road to 1911: A Visual History, marking the centennial anniversary of the 1911 Revolution in China, and the launch of the book on the same subject, In Revolution: 1911 and Beyond.

The exhibition features 86 photos, brought together by Liu for the first time from collections worldwide.

The photographs run from the Second Opium War in 1860 to the end of the Warlord Era in the early 1920s, and provide an insight into the origins of modern China, in which Hong Kong played a key role.

They illustrate the social conditions and attitudes of the era, the atmosphere inside the imperial court in the dying days of the Qing Dynasty, the lives of the mighty and the poor and various events that helped shape the transition of China from an empire to a republic. Liu will recount his experiences in compiling this visual history.

November 29 – December 7
Presented by the Journalism and Media Studies Centre, The University of Hong Kong
The Anita Chan Lai-Ling Gallery, and Fotogalerie

“The photograph itself doesn’t interest me. I want only to capture a minute part of reality.” – Henri Cartier-Bresson, the father of modern photojournalism.

Come explore the reality of everyday life in Hong Kong, as seen through the lenses of The University of Hong Kong’s journalism students and graduates.

The photos are a mishmash of ideas, visions and realities of what life in Hong Kong is, some from master photographer Michael Coyne’s photojournalism class at HKU, others by graduates who have become established photojournalists in their own right.
