We will be using the following tools in class:

Firefox - the open source browser. So that you get experience using something other than Internet Explorer.

Uniblogs.org – Free blog-hosting service tailored for university students. PLEASE USE THIS ONE FOR CLASS.

Google Reader – An “RSS reader” or “newsreader” program which enables you to track content from many websites and blogs from one browser pane.

Wetpaint – one of many services that allow you to set up your own wiki for free. Our class wiki is hosted here.

Del.icio.us – Social bookmarking service to share articles, blogposts and websites you want to keep track of or share with others.

Flickr – Photo hosting, sharing, and tagging.

Technorati – Use this to see who is linking to whom.

Blogpulse – Another tool to follow conversations on the web.

Audacity – Free audio editing.

Google Video – Free hosting for your video.

Soundslides – Not free, unfortunately. An easy tool to combine audio and photos for great multimedia slideshows.

Joomla – an open source content management system. It’s what we use to publish Hong Kong Stories.

Miro – formerly “Democracy.” A free, open source video player.

WordPress.com – Another free blog-hosting service based on the open-source WordPress platform (warning: blocked in Mainland China).

Bloglines – Online “newsreader” to follow blogs and news sources.

YouTube – The most famous place where you can get free hosting for your video. But there are length limitations.

BlipTV – Even more free hosting for your video (requires specific software on your computer to view)

Dotsub – online service to put subtitles on your video.

WordPress.org – Advanced blogging platform to install on your own server and customize (not for beginners).
