Required Work and Grading
Assessment
Grades will be calculated as follows:
20% – In-class work
15% – Class participation
25% – Assignments
20% – Soundslides team project
20% – “Hong Kong Stories” website reporting
(After all of your points are added up, they are adjusted on a curve, as required by university grading policy.)
Explanation:
Each of the above categories is explained below, along with a grading scale.
- IN-CLASS WORK: This is a lab class. You will be required to complete assigned tasks in class. These tasks cannot be completed or made up outside of class. Therefore, if you miss class you get a “zero” for the day’s in-class assignment. Exceptions will be considered in cases of legitimate personal emergencies.
Grading scale (per class): 0 – not done; 1 – incomplete; 2 – completed satisfactorily. (total student points/total possible points x 20 = grade for this part)
- CLASS PARTICIPATION: You are expected to offer your ideas in class and demonstrate that you have done and understood the readings and assignments. If you miss class you get a “zero” for that day’s participation.
Grading scale (per course): Instructors will note participation levels of individual students and assign an overal participation grade between 0-15 for the whole course.
- WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS: You will be asked to complete regular short assignments to reinforce skills you are learning in class. Details and deadlines will be specified in the class schedule.
Grading scale: 0 – not done; 1 – incomplete/didn’t follow instructions/late; 2 – ok but showed minimal effort or lack of understanding; 3 – good; 4 – very good; 5 – excellent (total student points/total possible points x 25 = grade for this part)
- SOUNDSLIDES TEAM PROJECT:You will work as teams to gather photos and audio, then put them together as part of an audio-visual slideshow on a topic related to the final project: Hong Kong’s environment.
Grading scale: Students will receive a score between 0-20 determined by the following factors: level of effort, teamwork, journalistic merit, quality of work, and application of skills, principles, and ideas taught in class.
- HONG KONG STORIES WEBSITE REPORTING: This semester students will produce online coverage of environmental issues in Hong Kong. Final work will be published on the Hong Kong Stories website. Students will divide up responsibilities to report and produce different aspects of the coverage.
Grading scale: Students will receive a score between 0-20 determined by the following factors: level of effort, teamwork, journalistic merit, quality of work, and application of skills, principles, and ideas taught in class.
