Post Class 3: Contempt of Court

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

That was a great class, everyone!! Thank you for being so engaged! Sorry we had to jam so much in because there’s no class next week. If you still have questions re: the briefing paper, please check the Briefing Assignments page on the course website for more details and/or  email me or Sky.  You need to choose either Cheng v. Tse or Jameel. It is due Friday, Feb. 18. Please email a soft copy and drop off a hard copy at JMSC.

In the meantime, as I mentioned, the Defamation Readings are for the next three classes (Feb. 15, Feb. 22 and March 8).  If you haven’t picked them up yet, please check with Jason Hui at JMSC.

Happy Chinese New Year!

Class 3: Feb 1/Contempt of Court/Court Reporting

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Next week we tackle legal reporting. Please refer to the Readings, which include Chapters 2 (The Legal System) and Chapter 4 (Court Reporting and Contempt of Court)  and some of the court cases we’ll be referring to.

As I mentioned, Cliff Buddle, deputy editor of the South China Morning Post and former senior courts reporter, will be on hand to help with the discussion. And we look forward to our volunteers who will be reporting to us from the front lines of the Nancy Kissel trial!

Class 2/Jan 25 2011: Freedom of Expression

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Thanks for your attentiveness last night for Danny Gittings’ lectures on legal foundations and freedom of expression. We know they were a lot to absorb but consider them building blocks for the weeks to come! If you have any questions or comments, include them here or email to me and we can talk about them in class next week.
