Hongmei Li
Hongmei Li (Ph.D) is an Assistant Professor at Georgia State University. Her research focuses on globalization, consumer culture, public diplomacy and culture of the Internet in China. Her dissertation investigates the rise of advertising as a profession in Post-Mao China and examines how Chinese advertising responded to the complex relationship between the local and the global, and tradition and modernity. Another line of her research is to examine how the power relationship between the state, the corporations and the citizens/consumers has changed, or is changing because of the increasing advances and proliferation of information and communication technologies. She plans to investigate China as a case study to see how the Internet is transforming Chinese politics and civic involvement in the context of the continuing macro-forces of globalization, consumer capitalism, and ideological changes. She will be a George Gerbner Fellow at the Annenberg School, University of Pennsylvania in 2008-9.
