Our Story website launched

Telling 18 years of the JMSC’s history under its founding director, Professor Ying Chan, is no easy task. But we’ve attempted it here, in an ambitious new multimedia website we call Our Story.

Our Story compiles information about key milestones in the Centre’s history, along with stories from its staff, students and alumni, all in one convenient place.

The site features an interactive timeline of key JMSC milestones

‘Our story was a hard one to tell and so our cutting-room floor is unfortunately cluttered,’ said Gene Mustain, editor for the project and a former faculty member and director of the Centre’s Reporting and Writing Programme.

‘But the mission was too daunting—five Chinese premiers have come and gone during Professor Chan’s reign, not to mention three US presidents, including one who served eight years and another who is closing in on eight,’ he said.

The website is organised according to the three ‘I’s’ strategy outlined as HKU’s vision in the recently published document, ‘Asia’s global university, The next decade, Our vision for 2016‒25’. The three ‘I’s’ stand for Innovation, International, Interdisciplinary, combining to make Impact.

Our Story includes details of the Centre’s research and projects, international conferences and speakers it has organised and hosted, and its innovative initiatives in computational and data journalism, and media entrepreneurship.

There is also an interactive timeline of academic staff who have worked at the JMSC

It also features the Centre’s academic and professional partners and donors, from locally in Hong Kong to others on multiple continents, and its work across disciplines with other HKU faculties and departments.

There is also a page about Eliot Hall and its transformation into a digital media centre.
