Undergraduate students performed a live news broadcast production demo to a standing-room only crowd of HKU hopefuls as part of the Information Day for Undergraduate Admissions on 7 November.

JMSC faculty and alumni also talked about the curriculum, teaching philosophy and admission requirements of the Bachelor of Journalism (BJ) programme.

Jeffrey Timmermans, Director of the BJ programme, said: ‘We think about journalism in its broadest possible sense. We live in an age of instant, global digital communication when everybody has the potential to be a journalist. We like to think of our programme as a communications focused, liberal arts degree for the digital age.’

BJ students Faye Wai and Justin Tong anchored the production demo, with other students serving as cameramen and producers. The UG production team also consisted of Sarah Wong, Isaac Cheung, Melissa Leung, Medhavi Arora, and Stephanie Chan.

The demo showcased the various aspects of producing a news broadcast, and linked out to reports, one of which—produced by Isabel Wong and Gene Lin—was filmed with a drone. Second-year BJ student Eric Cheung, currently on an exchange programme at the Danish School of Media and Journalism, also talked to the gathering about his studies, and introduced a report that he has made about the life of a transgender refugee in Denmark.

Professor Ying Chan, Founding Director of the JMSC, said: ‘We are very proud of our students. The excellent demonstrations showed that our students not only can work in journalism or the media, but they’re prepared for every job, every career, in this world.’
