MJ Alumni Cover Boao Forum in Hainan

More than 800 international journalists converged on Hainan Island last week for the Boao Forum For Asia, where leaders in government, business and academia shared their visions of the most pressing issues facing Asia and the world at large.

Four JMSC alumni were among those reporting on the forum.

Weng Xiaoying (MJ 2009) lives in Hong Kong and reports financial news for Sina.com.

She interviewed Charles Li, the Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing. She also covered John Studzineski, the senior managing editor of asset management and financial services company, Blackstone.

Liu Wei (MJ 2009) and Wang Jiapeng (MJ 2009) are based in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. After graduating from the JMSC, both joined Caixin Media.

Liu and Wang successfully landed several exclusive interviews during the Forum, including John McCormick, the CEO of RBS Asia Pacific.

“When we write for a professional business magazine, we not only need to report the news fast, we also have we to provide in depth analysis explaining the logic behind the figures, the cause and consequence of policies,” said Wang. “It’s like a race in two directions at the same time, but we made it.”

Han Wei (MJ 2009) lives in Beijing and covers business news for Sohu.com. He did an interview with Fidel V. Ramos, former President of Philippines during the event and Wei Jiafu, President and CEO of China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO).

“We headed towards the same destination from three cities,” said Han. “It was exciting to see familiar faces at Boao. We helped each other to come up with story ideas as we coped with the forum’s intense meeting agenda. We did notice that we are still benefiting from the writing skills that Gene Mustain taught us.”
