Bachelor of Journalism student, Alison Hui, spent two months interning at HK magazine this summer.
The first two are free magazines that are distributed around town; the latter is specifically distributed in hotels for tourists.
“The internship experience was really rewarding,” says Hui. “We were assigned writing works for the three magazines very soon after we arrived at the office. Most of the writing is listings that introduce different products and services. It was definitely exciting to see my short excerpts appear in magazines that are distributed around the town.”
Hui spent her time between writing leafing through back copies of the magazines to try to absorb the house style.
“Eventually when I left, one of the editors e-mailed me saying that I had made great improvement throughout the internship. This was incredibly rewarding,” she says. “It has definitely helped me to brush up my written English.”
Hui says the best thing to come out of the experience is that it’s cemented her desire to pursue a career in feature writing for lifestyle or food magazines.
