Legco Elections: JMSC’s Google Earth Map of 2008 Results

The JMSC’s development team has produced a simple geo-web application on the Google Earth platform presenting results of the 2008 Legislative Council Election in Hong Kong. It will be updated after the May 16, 2010 by-elections.

Using public data from the government’s elections website (2008) as well as geographic data from the Hong Kong census, we were able to create maps of districts by vote divisions.

Hong Kong’s legislative council (LegCo) is composed of 60 members, 30 of whom represent functional constituencies, while 30 others represent geographical constituencies. The people vote for a candidate list in one of Hong Kong’s five geographical constituencies by universal suffrage.

On 21 January 2010, five members of LegCo affiliated with pro-democracy parties resigned to trigger a by-election, to be held this Sunday, 16 May 2010.

The JMSC has also recently released the China Media Map for the China Media Project and a developer blog, The Rice Cooker, where technical know-how behind our projects is explained.
